- How to Enroll

Summary:

By knowing your enrollment windows and what each part of Medicare covers, you can avoid penalties and secure the healthcare benefits that work best for you. Make sure to mark important dates on your calendar, keep relevant documents on hand, and reach out for professional help if you run into questions. With these steps, you’ll have a smoother path to the Medicare coverage you deserve.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your Initial Enrollment Period spans seven months: it starts three months before your 65th birthday month, continues through that month, and ends three months afterward. During this time, you can sign up for:

  • Medicare Part A: Covers hospital stays and inpatient care.
  • Medicare Part B: Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and other medical services.

Enrolling early in your IEP often ensures your coverage starts on time—waiting until the last minute could delay your start date.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

If you (or your spouse) had insurance through an employer or union while you were first eligible, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period when that coverage ends. Typically, you’ll have eight months after losing employer coverage to enroll in Part B without incurring a late penalty. To avoid any hiccups, gather proof of your prior coverage before you apply.

Annual Election Period (AEP)

From October 15 to December 7 each year, you can review and change your Medicare options. During AEP, you can:

  • Switch from Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan
  • Move from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Join, switch, or drop a Part D prescription drug plan

Any changes you make during AEP usually take effect on January 1 of the following year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

If you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you have a chance to make a one-time change between January 1 and March 31 each year. This period allows you to:

  • Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
  • Move back to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan (if needed)
General Enrollment Period (GEP)

If you missed your Initial Enrollment Period and don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you can sign up for Medicare Part A or Part B during the General Enrollment Period, which runs from January 1 to March 31. Your coverage will typically begin on July 1, and you may face a late enrollment penalty.

How to Enroll
  • Apply Online: Visit the Social Security Administration website (if you’re eligible).
  • Call or Visit a Local Office: If you need help, you can call the Social Security Administration or schedule an appointment at a local office.
  • Stay Organized: Gather documents like proof of age and any insurance coverage details, so you can quickly provide information if asked.

we’re here to all your questions

Over the years, we’ve helped countless seniors navigate their coverage choices and find the plan that works best for them.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) typically bundles hospital, medical, and sometimes prescription drug coverage into a single plan. Many also include extra perks, such as dental or vision coverage. This can help lower your overall costs and streamline your benefits.

Yes! Certain Medicare Advantage plans go beyond basic coverage to include perks like gym memberships, transportation to medical appointments, or allowances for over-the-counter items. These extras can make a significant difference in both convenience and savings.

While sites like Medicare.gov are informative, the volume of information can be overwhelming. We make it easier by focusing on your specific health needs, location, and budget—so you won’t waste time sifting through every possible plan.

If you didn’t sign up for Medicare during your initial window, you may still qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you’ve had certain life changes (such as moving or losing other coverage). Otherwise, there are set times each year to enroll or switch plans—making it essential to know your options and deadlines.
